Universal Studios, Waterloo, Belgium. Legendary African-American folk singer Odetta (1930-2008) sang her spirituals with immeasurable sorrow and anguish. Her spiritual music expresses the horrific impact of slavery on millions of African people stolen from their homeland. Jazz en Baie, Mont-Saint-Michel, France. âJazz en Baieâ, a whining guitar sound, and the baritone voice of Big Daddy Wilson are the perfect recipe for an emotional and melancholy blues concert. As a young man, Big Daddy Wilson never saw a real blues concert before he walked into a Bremen club as a young soldier. This revelation drove the expatriate to throw himself head over heals into music. A few decades and a couple of studio albums later, heâs well-known as one of the greatest contemporary bluesmen: his baritone voice, of a rare emotional power, recounts the nostalgic stories of his native land. His album âI'm Your Manâ brought him his first international success. Always respectful of the blues roots he inherited, the charismatic singer adds soul, funk, country and gospel to his musical range; the memories of his American youth… 2014. koncert
Château d'HĂSrouville, Paris. In the 1960s, composer Michel Magne transformed the Château d'HĂSrouville, an 18th-century country house north of Paris and former home of lovers George Sand and FrĂSdĂSric Chopin, into the first residential recording studio. In addition to its excellent facilities, the complex featured a swimming pool and a beautiful garden, allowing artists to stay for weeks or months at a time. From David Bowie and Iggy Pop to Pink Floyd and Chet Baker, countless stars recorded unforgettable music here until the studio closed in the 1980s. Three decades later, Château d'HĂSrouville has reopened its doors. This program follows American baritone Gregory Porter as he collaborates with the British electro-pop band Metronomy. The former American football player, who later dedicated himself entirely to music, gives an interview at HĂSrouville and performs songs including âDon't Loose Your Steamâ, âIn Fashionâ, and âSunnyâ. The British band Metronomy contributes songs such as âThe Lookâ, âNight Owlâ, and âMick Slowâ. Metronomy consists of Joseph Mount (drums), Oscar Cash (saxophone, keys), and Michael Lovett (keys). Palais des Beaux-Arts, Charleroi, Belgium. Count Basie is one of the most important bandleaders of the swing era. With the exception of a brief period in the early '50s, he led a big band from 1935 until his death almost 50 years later. Basie's orchestra was characterized by a light, swinging rhythm section that he led from the piano, lively ensemble work, and generous soloing. Basie was not a composer like Duke Ellington or an important soloist like Benny Goodman. His instrument was his band, which was considered the epitome of swing and deeply influenced jazz. Rhino Jazz Festival, Saint-Chamond, France. Hailing from a long tradition of Malian kora players, Ballake Sissoko has worked with renowned musicians such as Toumani DiabatĂS and Taj Mahal. He met the French born Vincent SĂSgal by chance, and the two began jamming together, uncertain of what kind of music might result. As a former member of the French National Orchestra, SĂSgal's Western classical training does not prevent him from exploring a wide variety of extended techniques, rendering his cello a flexible partner to Sissoko's kora. A childhood spent in the Pigalle district of Paris surrounded by immigrant communities exposed SĂSgal to African music from an early age. As such, he possesses a natural sensitivity to Sissoko's West-African style. The concert shows a brilliant interplay between the two musicians and combines the several worlds of jazz, Malian and classical music… 2009. koncert

MĂźncher Klaviersommer, Munich, Germany. In the midst of the blossoming of the free-jazz scene, pianist Cecil Taylor (1929) probably represented the non-jazz aspect of the movement better than anyone else. Many of the innovations of the 1960s were pioneered by his records. His fusion of exuberance and atonality was particularly influential. Like saxophonist Ornette Coleman, who initially overshadowed him, Taylor was one of the first musicians to release jazz improvisation from fixed harmonic structures. Influenced by both classical music and jazz, Taylor became a virtuoso pianist with a unique range of dynamics, attacks, and harmonic resources, including many tone clusters played for percussive, not harmonic, effect. Seemingly indefatigable, Michalicky would play improvised solos during breaks in the band's sets, if the patrons wished.
